The 9th annual World Barista Championship takes place June 19th - 22nd in Copenhagen. National barista champions from 40 countries around the globe will journey this year to the world's largest coffee competition. Competing baristas will each prepare four perfect espressos, four traditional cappuccinos and four of their own imaginative signature drinks using espresso -- all within 15 minutes. As they compete, baristas will be under the close scrutiny of a team of exacting judges and in front of a bank of video cameras and a huge and often very enthusiastic international audience.

The convenience store industry recently held its first ever specialty coffee-focused symposium immediately following the Specialty Coffee Association of America's conference and exhibition in Minneapolis this May. Organizer and host CSP Magazine was there to cover the event moderated by Andrew Hetzel:

Coffee lovers, burned out from the dark roasts popularized by some gourmet specialty coffee chains, are increasingly turning to lighter-roasted beans for their daily pick-me-ups. Coffee industry watchers say as coffee drinkers have matured, they are looking for more flavor and more originality -- a desire that has created new lighter-roasted options in the market.

Fresh off of their Oprah appearance Friday, May 9, our friends at Zingerman’s were featured on NPR’s Weekend Edition the following Sunday.
In 1982, Paul Saginaw and Ari Weinzweig opened Zingerman’s Deli in Ann Arbor, Mich. After 26 years, they have built an empire called Zingerman’s Community of Businesses that Inc. magazine called “The Coolest Small Company in America.” On Friday, Oprah Winfrey rated a sandwich from Zingerman’s an amazing 11 out of 5.
We are all pleased to see these great guys get some well-deserved attention for their contributions to the world of specialty food and coffee. Way to go!
